Try deleting your .minecraft (backup your saves though!) and re-download the files.

Ive heard many people saying this,
I personally believe it is just a shear increase in people logging into minecraft. This is due to the fact that a large percentage of people are on a break or holiday from school/work. And because it is Saturday its when people are most busy.
To solve this I would suggest just keep trying.

I agree with what Shark said, also there was a tweet from the mojang team last night saying that there are some errors on their end for 1.2.5 involving servers.
